The essential requirements

3 lettersFrom three different referees
12 monthsMinimum detailed knowledge of your work
3 pagesMaximum length of each letter
CredentialsReferee CV or accepted proof required

Who should write the letters?

Each referee must be an established expert in digital technology and must have detailed knowledge of the applicant's work for at least 12 months. A prestigious title alone is not enough if the person cannot explain the applicant's work directly and specifically.

The opening of each letter should establish the referee's own credibility using verifiable facts such as current role, years of relevant leadership, products or companies led, scale of responsibility and recognised achievements.

What every letter should cover

How the referee knows the applicant and for how long.

Specific achievements, skills and contributions in digital technology.

Why those achievements demonstrate Exceptional Talent or Exceptional Promise.

How living in the UK would benefit the applicant.

How the applicant would contribute to UK digital technology.

The applicant's future plans for work.

Formal checks that are easy to miss

Each letter must be written specifically for the Global Talent application, typed, dated and signed. It should contain the referee's telephone number and email address, plus the organisation's logo and registered address where applicable. The referee's CV or another accepted proof of credentials should accompany it.

Common weaknesses

Letters become weaker when they repeat the same examples, offer broad praise without evidence, describe ordinary employment performance, fail to prove the referee's standing, or discuss UK contribution only in generic terms. The strongest set gives three distinct and credible perspectives while supporting one coherent application narrative.
